The first drug to treat erectile dysfunction is being developed to reduce the number of men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and the frequency of sexual intercourse. The drug is being tested as a treatment for the condition.
The first drug is approved to treat erectile dysfunction in up to 25% of men, but a study shows that only about one in 10 men will experience sexual activity after taking the drug, according to the World Health Organization.
“The drug will be available in pharmacies to buy the drugs,” said Dr. Peter M. Lister of the University of Minnesota in Minnesota, who led the study.
“The drugs will be taken one hour before sexual intercourse and then every four hours thereafter,” Lister said. “The drugs have a short half-life of roughly two hours, so it is important to take the drugs at the same time every night.”
Although erectile dysfunction is a condition that affects the ability to have or enjoy sexual activity, it does not cause sexual dysfunction. The drug does not cause physical arousal or a lack of sexual desire, but it does cause other problems, such as low blood pressure.
Lister said he was surprised by the results of the study. “This was a very small sample,” he said. “We did find that men taking the drug experienced a significant improvement in their sexual function.”
Lister said the drug’s benefits are not permanent. “The drug is safe, effective and has been in use for more than a decade,” he said.
Dr. David B. Ricks, a urologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, said the drug will be used in men with erectile dysfunction as a treatment for the condition. “There are no other approved drugs for treating erectile dysfunction,” he said.
Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Viagra, has been in discussions with regulators about the drug for more than a year. The company said it plans to continue selling the drug in the U. S. until April 15.

“We hope this is the first drug that we can use to treat erectile dysfunction,” he said.
The drug is being tested in a pilot study in which men who have diabetes or have had a blood pressure problem have been given a placebo. The placebo also is given in the clinic, to help determine if it is effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
The drug is being tested in a clinical trial to see if it can be used in men with erectile dysfunction, or a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Lister said he expects the drug will be tested to see if it can be used to treat an enlarged prostate. He said he is also concerned that patients taking the drug may have a higher risk of developing bladder cancer, a type of cancer.
